Probiotics and Allergies

Probiotics are live bacteria known to have a beneficial effect on human health when taken orally. Bifidobacterium is one of the major intestinal bacteria, and has been shown to favorably alter the intestinal microflora balance; prevent the growth of harmful bacteria; promote good digestion; boost immune function; and increase resistance to infection. Research now shows that Bifidobacterium bifidum plays a role in suppressing certain types of allergic conditions.

One study investigated the impact of Wakunaga’s Kyo-Dophilus® live bacteria Bifidobacterium bifidum G9-1 (BBG9-1) on immunoglobulin E production when administered orally. Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a class of proteins that release antibodies in response to an allergic substance (allergen). A person who has an allergy usually has elevated blood levels of IgE.

In the study, live bacteria Bifidobacterium bifidum G9-1 was given orally to subjects for 2 weeks, beginning one week before an injection of ovalbumin (egg white) that was used to induce an allergic reaction. Researchers found that treatment with the Bifidobacterium bifidum G9-1 significantly reduced total blood IgE level. The study concluded that oral intake of Bifidobacterium bifidum G9-1 reduces the production of IgE and is useful for protection against IgE-dependent allergies.

Says Dr. Haru Amagase, Director of Research & Development at Wakunaga, “These findings are great news for people who suffer with allergies, because they no longer have to rely solely on anti-histamines for allergy relief. By enhancing the immune system with probiotics, we can actually change conditions in the body, making allergic reaction less likely. This benefit adds to the long list of positive results triggered by probiotic supplementation, and hopefully, will encourage people to add probiotics to their allergy-management plan.”
